Why should you learn data science? Two students’ perspectives

Are you curious? Do you have a passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)? Do you enjoy robotics or statistics? Do you like to solve hard problems?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you might have what it takes to be a data scientist.

Recently, I interviewed two students to understand firsthand why they decided to study data science, and to gain their perspectives on learning data science skills. In this series of blog posts, you’ll hear why data science appeals to them, how professors and universities foster an interest in data science, how SAS plays a role in data science studies – and more.

Changing the world with data science

“I chose to pursue a STEM career because I want to go and change the world,” says Lauren Agrigento, a student at Louisiana State University. “And specifically, I’m doing analytics because it’s the fastest growing field right now.”

Jessica Rudd, a PhD candidate at Kennesaw State University is also passionate about generating change with data. “Whether it’s a business application or something that improves personal services or improves predictive medicine, there's so many ways [data science]affects the world -- from the individual person to the Fortune 500 company.”
